The inauguration of the WACOT Rice out-grower scheme took place under the auspices of the Federal Government

Date:

Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, launched the distribution of agricultural inputs for the 2024 dry season farming to out-grower farmers in Argungu, Kebbi State. The primary objective of the out-grower program is to enhance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers by facilitating their access to necessary agri-input financing, providing training in yield enhancement techniques, and promoting good agronomic practices.

During the launch event, Senator Kyari paid a visit to the state-of-the-art 250,000-ton mill of WACOT Rice, which is scheduled for official inauguration later this year. He expressed his satisfaction with the initiative and recognized its potential to significantly augment farmers’ productivity and income. Senator Kyari commended WACOT Rice and its parent company, Tropical General Investments Group, for their unwavering commitment to empowering farmers across different agricultural value chains throughout the country. He specifically acknowledged the considerable investments made by TGI in agriculture and other sectors, affirming that these efforts align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope eight-point agenda.

“I am impressed with what I have witnessed. This project is heading in the right direction by utilizing locally sourced farm produce as raw materials. The government is fully prepared to support initiatives like WACOT Rice, recognizing the capacity they possess to generate employment opportunities and enhance livelihoods. As part of our strategic focus, we are actively considering the allocation of farmland to WACOT Rice, thereby further strengthening our agricultural capabilities,” Senator Kyari stated.

Farouk Gumel, Chairman of WACOT Rice and Vice Chairman (Africa) of TGI Group, reiterated the company’s unwavering commitment to ensuring Nigeria’s food security. He emphasized the inclusive nature of the out-grower program, which extends its support to farmers from diverse backgrounds through the provision of certified seeds, agrochemicals, and training sessions aimed at enhancing productivity and income. Gumel expressed enthusiasm for hosting distinguished guests at the project site, acknowledging that there might be limited understanding of the initiatives undertaken by WACOT Rice.

“We are always thrilled to welcome special guests to our facility. The feedback we receive serves as an encouragement to redouble our production efforts. The local community here is characterized by its peacefulness, inclusivity, and supportiveness, and our achievements are not solely the result of hard work but also the love shown by the host community.”
