South Korea Teammate Clash Results in Son’s Finger Injury

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur and South Korea captain Son Heung-min hurt his finger in a fight with his teammates just before South Korea’s elimination from the Asian Cup.

The incident happened during a team dinner before their 2-0 loss to Jordan in the semifinals. This defeat prolonged their 64-year-long quest for another Asian Cup championship.

“It happened when some young players went up to play table tennis, and Son Heung-min and other older players took issue with it,” a South Korean Football Federation official told Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday.

“The players exchanged a few words and Son hurt his finger in the process.”

The Korean Football Association could not be reached for immediate comment regarding the incident.

After Son Heung-min’s return from the tournament in Qatar, he played as a substitute in Tottenham’s Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. Son had his right index and middle fingers taped together. Despite the injury, the 31-year-old made a significant contribution to the game, providing an assist in the 96th minute for Brennan Johnson, who scored the winning goal in Tottenham’s 2-1 victory.
