Governor Diri Laments Rising Costs of Development Projects Due to Inflation

Date:

Yenagoa – Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has expressed concern over the impact of rising inflation and the prevailing economic hardship on ongoing development projects in the state.

Speaking to protesters from the Nigeria Labour Congress during a gathering at the Government House in Yenagoa yesterday, Governor Diri acknowledged the difficulties faced by ordinary citizens and revealed that contractors are requesting cost variations due to the surge in prices.

“The current hardship knows no boundaries, affecting both the rich and the poor. Even as the governor, I am not exempt from its impact,” said Governor Diri.

He gave an example of how the rising costs of food items are affecting him personally. “The food items that used to cost one naira are now being priced at ten naira. Consequently, I am no longer able to extend invitations for breakfast meetings as before,” the governor told protesters.

While attributing soaring consumer prices to the floating exchange rate policy set by the Federal Government, Governor Diri expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu did not intend to inflict hardship on citizens.

“I am convinced that the President of this country does not intend to punish us. The policies being implemented are carefully considered,” he stated.

Diri assured the protesters that the government would continue providing guidance to the Federal Government. He is optimistic the President will take appropriate actions in response to concerns about the impact of inflation.

The governor’s comments come as inflation in Nigeria surged to a 17-year high of 21.09% in October 2022, reflecting rising costs that are squeezing incomes and dampening economic growth.
