Reopening of Niger Republic Border Imminent, Assures Customs Authority

Date:

The Area Controller of the Sokoto/Zamfara Area Command of the Nigeria Customs, Comptroller Kamal Mohammed, has provided assurance to stakeholders at the Illela border that preparations are underway for the reopening of the border.

The final authorization from higher authorities is awaited before the official announcement.

During a recent visit to the Nigeria Customs Illela border Station, Comptroller Mohammed emphasized that the border reopening is drawing closer, following the lifting of ECOWAS sanctions on Niger Republic and the subsequent restoration of power supply to the country. Accompanied by his management team, he appealed to the border community to remain patient and law-abiding, highlighting that all government policies aim to enhance the well-being of citizens.

Prior to his visit to the border station, Comptroller Mohammed met with Sarki Rafin Illela, the traditional ruler of Illela, and engaged in discussions with leaders of various teacher’s groups and community representatives. During these meetings, they earnestly appealed for government intervention due to the challenging economic situation in the country.

The extraordinary summit on the peace, political, and security situation in the ECOWAS sub-region, held in Abuja on February 24, resulted in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) deciding to lift certain sanctions imposed on Niger Republic. These sanctions, which included the closure of land and air borders between Niger Republic and all ECOWAS nations, a no-flight zone for commercial flights to and from Niger Republic, suspension of commercial and financial transactions between ECOWAS member states and Niger Republic, and freezing of service transactions including utility services, have been revoked.

The imminent reopening of the Niger Republic border brings hope for improved regional cooperation and economic activities. The customs authorities are diligently working towards the final steps required before the official announcement, which will mark a significant milestone in the region’s progress.
