Adetshina’s Exceptional Performance Earns Global Admiration, Continues Legacy of Nigerian Beauty Queens
Nigeria’s Chidimma Vanessa Adetshina made history at the 73rd Miss Universe Competition, held at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico, by securing the first runner-up position. In a nail-biting finale, Adetshina and Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, vied for the coveted crown, showcasing their intellect, talent, and elegance.
The Miss Universe Organization praised the electrifying moment on Instagram: “The final two! Nigeria and Denmark, two incredible women, one unforgettable moment.” Ultimately, Theilvig took home the crown, succeeding Miss Universe 2023, Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua.
Adetshina’s remarkable performance earned widespread acclaim from judges and audiences worldwide. Her achievement is a testament to her dedication and poise, solidifying Nigeria’s presence on the global beauty stage.
This feat is not unprecedented for Nigeria. Agbani Darego paved the way in 2001, becoming the first Black African to win the Miss World title at just 18. Darego’s victory inspired a generation of Nigerian women, cementing her status as an iconic beauty queen.
Adetshina’s journey was not without challenges. She withdrew from the Miss South Africa 2024 contest amidst controversy surrounding her nationality. Undeterred, she went on to represent Taraba State and claim the Miss Universe Nigeria title.
Adetshina’s accomplishment serves as a reminder of Nigeria’s rich legacy in international beauty pageants, continuing the tradition of excellence set by trailblazers like Agbani Darego.
