Both banks highlighted that a criminal would also need access to a registered phone and other verification methods to fully exploit the system. However, as demonstrated by recent scams, criminals often use social engineering to gain such access.

The risks of AI-driven fraud extend beyond banking. Consumer champion Martin Lewis and actor James Nesbitt are among the public figures whose voices have been cloned for scams. Nesbitt described hearing his AI-cloned voice as “horrifying,” reflecting the broader implications of this technology.

In one reported case, a woman was deceived into sharing personal details with a fraudster posing as her bank. The scammer’s knowledge of her transaction history, possibly obtained through illicit means, bolstered their credibility.

The Need for Enhanced Security Measures

Experts agree that banks and organizations relying on biometric authentication must adapt to these emerging threats. Multi-factor authentication, combining voice recognition with additional verification steps, could mitigate risks.
