Fresh Election to Hold in Parts of Kogi on November 18, Says INEC

Date:

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that a fresh election will be held in parts of Kogi State on November 18, 2023. This decision comes after the suspension of elections in several locations in the state due to the completion of result sheets before the commencement of voting in affected polling units.

Reasons for the Fresh Election:
The most critical incident occurred in nine out of ten wards in Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area (LGA). Similar incidents were also reported in Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okehi, and Okene.
In Ogori/Magongo LGA, only the result of Oshobane Ward II with eight polling units and 2,264 registered voters has been collated. Elections in the other nine wards involving 59 polling units and 15,136 registered voters remain suspended.
INEC’s Decision and Process:

In accordance with Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act 2022 and Clause 59 of INEC Regulations and Guidelines on the Conduct of Elections 2022, a fresh election will be held on November 18, 2023, in the affected polling units.
The decision to hold fresh elections is subject to the Returning Officer’s determination of the application of the Margin of Lead Principle.
INEC is committed to following the audit trail of personnel and materials to identify any individuals who may have undermined the electoral process and will apply appropriate sanctions where necessary.

INEC reassures voters in Kogi State that their votes will continue to count and their wishes will be respected.
