Breaking: Abductors Demand N20m Ransom For Sokoto Tsangaya Students

Date:

Gunmen who abducted 15 students from a religious school in Sokoto State, Nigeria, have reportedly reached out to the families, demanding a staggering ₦20 million (around $45,000) for their safe return. This news comes amidst rising concerns for the students’ safety and increasing pressure on authorities to secure their release.

The abduction occurred in the early hours of Saturday, March 9th, in Gidan Bakuso village, located within the Gada Local Government Area. The gunmen targeted students from a Tsangaya school, a traditional Islamic institution known for its focus on Quranic studies.

News of the ransom demand has exacerbated the anxieties of the affected families and the wider Nigerian community. Liman Abubakar, the proprietor of the school, confirmed contact with the abductors, stating they requested the ₦20 million ransom through the village head.

The Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ahmed Rufai, assured the public that authorities are actively working towards the students’ release. However, the ransom demand adds a new layer of complexity to the situation, raising concerns about the potential strain it may place on the families’ resources and the possibility of further delays in securing the students’ safe return.

This abduction is not an isolated event. School kidnappings have unfortunately become a recurring issue in several regions across Nigeria. In December 2023, a similar incident occurred in Katsina State, where over 30 students were abducted from a government-run school.

These repeated abductions have sparked outrage and calls for stricter security measures around educational institutions. The Nigerian government has faced mounting pressure to address the underlying factors contributing to these incidents, including widespread poverty and the activities of criminal groups operating in certain areas.

The current situation in Sokoto demands immediate and decisive action from the authorities. Collaborating effectively with local communities and leveraging intelligence gathering efforts are crucial in apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring the safe return of the abducted students.

Furthermore, addressing the root causes of school kidnappings through improved security measures, investment in education infrastructure, and tackling regional social issues are essential steps towards preventing similar tragedies in the future.

This situation continues to develop, and swift action from authorities alongside community support is crucial to ensure the safe return of the abducted students.
