On Tuesday, May 28, the Organized Labour staged a dramatic walkout during the Tripartite Committee meeting on Minimum Wage, firmly rejecting the federal government’s increased offer of N60,000.
The labour unions, which had previously demanded ₦497,000, slightly adjusted their stance to ₦494,000. This came after the government’s initial proposals of ₦48,000 and ₦54,000 were also turned down by the unions last week.
With the deadline for negotiations rapidly approaching on May 31, the Tripartite Committee, responsible for establishing a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers, has yet to reach a consensus. The labour unions’ steadfast position highlights the ongoing tension and the significant gap between the demands of the workers and the government’s offers. The outcome of these negotiations is highly anticipated as it will impact the livelihoods of millions of Nigerian workers.
