The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched Operation Air Clean, a bold initiative aimed at addressing corruption, boosting security, and enhancing the passenger experience at Nigerian airports, particularly at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) and the General Aviation Terminal (GAT). This comprehensive effort is designed to ensure compliance with international aviation standards while improving operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction during peak travel seasons.

Key Measures for MMIA

1. Eliminating Redundancy in Inspections:
FAAN is phasing out joint inspection tables, replacing them with intelligence-based searches, automated systems, and dedicated camera-monitored areas. This move will reduce delays and improve passenger flow.

2. Streamlined Passenger Processing:
The integration of DSS and Immigration counters will minimize bottlenecks, while customs checkpoints will be relocated to specific screening areas for smoother processing.

3. Transparency in Search Procedures:
Secondary screenings will now occur in designated rooms equipped with real-time displays showing officer names and details, fostering trust and transparency in operations.

Broader Enhancements

FAAN is making strategic collaborations with the NDLEA, AVSEC, and DSS to tighten airport security. Regular patrols and swift mobile courts will address offenses like touting and unauthorized activities, ensuring a safer environment for travelers.

Operational upgrades include

  • Secure Meet and Greet areas for visitors
  • Better lighting, and clear signage enforcing rules like the three-minute pickup policy.
  • For the General Aviation Terminal (GAT), a timed parking system and stricter regulations for car hire services aim to curb touting and reduce passenger harassment.

A Commitment to Global Standards

Through these reforms, FAAN seeks to modernize Nigerian airports, improve security infrastructure, and deliver world-class service. This includes staff training, infrastructure upgrades, and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies. These measures not only streamline airport operations but also position Nigerian airports as safe, efficient, and passenger-friendly hubs on the global aviation map.

Operation Air Clean exemplifies FAAN’s dedication to transforming the aviation sector and ensuring a seamless, secure, and enjoyable travel experience for all.
