Former Governor emphasizes the need for responsible social media usage to prevent abuse
In a recent statement, former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has called for the implementation of a law to regulate social media usage, both for platform owners and users, in order to prevent its potential for abuse.
Highlighting the significance of social media in today’s society, Fayose acknowledged its importance while emphasizing the necessity of regulations governing its usage. Through a post on his verified social media account, he stated, “We can no longer afford to operate in an unregulated social media space. Usage must be guided by laws that apply to both platform owners and users.”
Fayose further stressed that social media platforms play a crucial role in fighting crime globally, including Nigeria. However, he expressed concern about the increasing misuse and dissemination of misinformation through these platforms. He emphasized that responsible governments worldwide are taking steps to address these excesses through regulations.
Acknowledging the skepticism surrounding government regulations among Nigerians, Fayose assured users with good intentions that there is no cause for concern. He emphasized that the proposed regulations aim to curb abuse and promote responsible social media practices.
Earlier last week, Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, also voiced similar concerns about social media, calling for its regulation. Gbajabiamila stated, “The level of abuse and misinformation on social media is worrisome. No responsible government can turn a blind eye to these excesses. Regulations have been implemented in other countries to address this issue.”
Gbajabiamila highlighted the potential dangers associated with the uncontrolled spread of information on social media platforms. He emphasized the need for regulation to safeguard both society and individuals, as the reach of social media can extend to millions of people globally.
Both Fayose and Gbajabiamila’s calls for regulation reflect the growing recognition of the need for responsible social media usage and the prevention of its potential negative consequences. As the debate on social media regulation continues, striking a balance between freedom of expression and curbing abuse remains a critical consideration for policymakers.
