Germany Launches Probe into Leaked Military Audio on Ukraine Arms

Date:

The German government has launched an investigation after a secret recording emerged of senior military officers discussing arms sales to Ukraine. According to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the leaked 38-minute audio is a “very serious matter” and will be thoroughly examined.

Posted online by Russian state media head Margarita Simonyan, the recording captured air force talks about delivering Taurus precision-guided missiles to Ukrainian forces. One officer noted the missiles could hit ammunition depots and other targets from afar. More controversially, they floated using Taurus missiles to target Russia’s strategically vital Kerch Bridge connecting Crimea to mainland Ukraine.

However, Germany has resisted Ukrainian calls for heavy weapons like Taurus systems over fears they could escalate hostilities or be used to attack Russian territory. The leak has added complications as Berlin considers further military aid for Ukraine. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called the leak’s timing – on the funeral of opposition figure Alexey Navalny – and remarks by close Putin ally Dmitry Medvedev characterizing Germany as readying for war, “very questionable.”

Some experts suggest Russia may have intercepted and disseminated the recording as an influence operation. “It’s highly unlikely they reacted so quickly. It was certainly coordinated,” said Pistorius. Moscow is demanding Berlin provide explanations, with a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stating any refusal would be viewed as an “admission of guilt.”

The leak underscores vulnerabilities in secure communications and ongoing divisions within Germany’s ruling coalition over arms supplies. With winter setting in, Kyiv remains desperately short of weapons as it battles to retake occupied lands in the south and east. How Berlin chooses to handle further requests could impact both the conflict and relations with Moscow.

German lawmakers are also warning more intercepted conversations discussing arms for Ukraine may surface. This could exacerbate tensions as both sides ramp up information operations seeking to sway domestic audiences. As investigations proceed, questions linger over the audio’s provenance and purpose. Its release appears carefully timed to both signal and stoke political pressures. However, the probe aims to uncover its true origins and sequence of events.
