The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced plans to hire a foreign technical adviser for the Super Eagles following the team’s poor performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Nigeria has not secured a win in their last four qualification matches, including a surprising defeat to Benin Republic. This has led to widespread calls from fans for the dismissal of current coach Finidi George.

In a statement released Thursday, after a meeting held on June 12, 2024, the NFF apologized to Nigerians for the team’s recent failures and assured that a new technical adviser would be appointed “in the coming weeks.” The NFF emphasized their commitment to preparing a stronger squad for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September and the continuation of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.

“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation met on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in a hybrid mode to discuss critical issues in Nigerian football and resolved as follows:

“The Executive Committee wholeheartedly apologizes to Nigerians for the disappointing performance and poor results of the Senior Men’s National Team, the Super Eagles, in four out of ten matches in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series. We pledge to work diligently to implement necessary measures to ensure a better-prepared team for the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers and the resumption of World Cup qualifiers in March 2025,” the NFF stated.

Additionally, the NFF expressed dissatisfaction with some players’ attitudes towards national assignments and decided to enhance their scouting efforts. They aim to identify exceptional Nigeria-eligible players worldwide who can significantly contribute to the national team.

Beyond the Super Eagles, the NFF also promised to support the Super Falcons in their preparation for the Olympics in France, scheduled from July 24 to August 11.
