-Calls for inclusivity and transparency in Nigeria’s electoral process
Nigerian Senator Olamilekan Adeola popularly known as Yayi, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to consider alternative identification methods for voters
The lawmaker who is Chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriation representing Ogun West Senatorial District suggests using international passports, national identity cards NIN, or driver’s licenses alongside the Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) would help to prevent disenfranchisement.
He praised the use of National Identity Numbers and Driver’s Licences as voter identification at the ongoing Ogun State local government election, calling it a strategy to prevent voter disenfranchisement and ensure everyone can participate.
Yayi, who voted at the U.A.M.C. Polling Unit in Pahayi, Ilaro, noted that INEC can address challenges associated with the Permanent Voter’s Card and promote a smoother voting experience for Nigerians by exploring alternative voter identification methods
However, he acknowledged that current electoral law only recognizes PVCs, and changes would require amendments to the Electoral Act.
The senator emphasized the need for a thorough and legal process to implement these changes, ensuring transparency and inclusivity in Nigeria’s electoral process. His proposal echoes similar advocacy by civil society organizations like Yiaga Africa.
Adeola, however also commended the peaceful election process in his senatorial district and the state, noting that the turnout was impressive as reported from everywhere across the length and breadth of his senatorial district and, by extension, across the state.
