In an exclusive interview with NoireTV, Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, emphasized that any potential merger with his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart, Atiku Abubakar, must prioritize the nation’s welfare over political gains. Obi expressed his commitment to improving governance and addressing the needs of the less privileged in Nigeria.
Notably, NoireTV, an esteemed American multinational premium cable channel owned by Caspen Media, provided the platform for Obi’s candid remarks. The former Anambra governor stressed that alliances should transcend electoral victories and state control, emphasizing his dedication to seeing Nigeria flourish.
Obi praised Atiku’s willingness to support him, particularly if the presidency rotates to the South East. However, he underscored the importance of mergers and collaborations aimed at effective governance and national development.
He stated, “I am not desperate to be president; I am desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor, because we have a lot of potential.” Obi reiterated his readiness to support initiatives geared towards enhancing Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape, whether at the party, individual, or broader level.
Atiku, in a recent interview with BBC Hausa Service, reiterated his commitment to abide by the PDP’s decision regarding the presidential ticket’s zoning. He expressed his willingness to support Obi’s candidacy if the party selects him as the South East’s representative in the 2027 elections.
While acknowledging the possibility of a merger between the PDP and Labour Party, Atiku emphasized that party members would ultimately determine his role in the upcoming elections. His meeting with Obi hinted at a potential alliance, underscoring the evolving political landscape leading up to 2027.
