The Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) has announced a widespread strike set to begin on Thursday, April 4, 2024.
The union claims that the strike is a response to ongoing anti-labor practices targeting field engineers, allegedly carried out by subcontractors.
In an official statement provided, PTECSSAN expressed their concerns regarding the treatment of workers employed by subcontractors such as Reime Group, All Streamenergy Solutions Limited, Uppercrest Limited, Tyllium Nigeria Limited, and Specific Tools and Techniques Limited. These subcontractors are reportedly involved in projects awarded by Huawei Technologies Nigeria Limited.
Among the grievances raised by PTECSSAN are the deplorable working conditions, which they liken to modern-day slavery, the lack of fair compensation for the workers’ efforts, and the absence of adequate security measures, particularly during late-night field assignments.
The union is demanding immediate recognition of employees’ fundamental rights to association, the acknowledgment of PTECSSAN as the official negotiating body for workers’ welfare, and proper remittance of membership dues. They further call for the regularization of employment for union members involved in Huawei projects, compliance with pension and health insurance regulations, and the initiation of negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement.
Despite attempts by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to mediate and address these concerns through conciliatory meetings, the companies involved have allegedly refused to engage constructively, leaving the union with no choice but to resort to industrial action.
PTECSSAN has urged Nigerians to bear with them during the strike and any potential inconveniences it may cause. They emphasize that their actions aim to rectify the alleged exploitative labor practices and ensure fair treatment for workers in the telecommunications industry.
